Population health management has gained attention in recent years due to rising health care costs. To combat the high cost of health care, the industry is shifting from volume to value, and physicians are being rewarded for providing necessary care in the most cost-effective manner. “Simply put, health care reimbursement is changing and healthcare providers need to acclimate,” Lacevic says. “Organizations that focus on having systems in place that allow for patient-centered, quality health care across a population will come out ahead.”
Of course, there are a number of business and regulatory issues to consider, and providers must ensure they have the internal and external capabilities, support and expertise to fully implement and participate in population health management. The team should include a robust compliance program guided by trusted external advisors, including a legal team to ensure that the organization’s day-to-day operations comply with both state and federal regulatory requirements.
