In an article published in Healthcare Business Today on April 20, Erin Aebel and J. Trevor Carson discussed how to navigate the growing use of AI across the healthcare industry while also following HIPPA guidelines and regulations. The article outlined various versions of AI, how they are used and best practices to ensure patient information is protected.
“An area of concern is that a provider may use an open AI system to share patient information in a way that constitutes a data breach and a violation of HIPAA,” Aebel and Carson noted. “It is important that any AI system used by a provider is a closed AI System to ensure that protected health information is not improperly disclosed to third parties.”
As AI continues to scale into the healthcare industry, HIPPA standards have been put into question. Aebel and Carson explained how “compliance should start internally with the practice either creating or updating internal policies that prohibit the use of protected health information in any non-HIPAA compliant AI systems.” The article went on to explore how providers need to ensure proper due diligence and keep patient protection as the top priority to effectively adapt AI into their practice.
