In a profile published on Law.com as part of the publication’s “How I Made Practice Group Chair” series, Tom Cockriel, Co-Leader of Trenam’s Business Transactions practice group, provided insight on his career journey, including expanding his impact to guide how the firm serves clients, developing future leaders and staying on the cutting edge of legal technology innovation.
“Effective leadership requires more than just legal skill,” said Cockriel. “You need deep subject-matter knowledge, strong business development instincts, and the ability to build and motivate a team.”
Cockriel also shared how the role involves working across all aspects of the firm from finance, marketing, staffing, operations and client service.
“I’ve also been struck by how collaborative it is leading effectively requires constant coordination with other practice groups and non-attorney departments as well,” said Cockriel. “Most of all, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the influence you can have in shaping culture, mentoring people, and driving the firm forward.”
Cockriel advised that others looking to work their way up into a leadership role should focus on client service and consistency as they build their credibility and have patience with themselves and their team. He also encouraged learning business and financial tips from advisers and clients, as leadership in a firm requires both business and legal savvy.
